What is a cookie?
A cookie is any type of data storage and retrieval device used on the user’s terminal to store and retrieve previously stored information. Its utility is to allow the website to remember your visit when you browse the page again. Cookies usually store technical information, personal preferences, content personalization, usage statistics, social network links, user account access, etc.
What types of cookies are used and for what purpose?
Depending on the entity that manages the device or domain from which cookies are sent and handles the obtained data:
- First-party cookies: These are sent to the user’s terminal from a device or domain managed by the website itself and from which the service or requested information is provided.
- Third-party cookies: These are sent to the user’s terminal from a device or domain that is not managed by the website but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
If cookies are installed from a device or domain managed by the website, but the information collected is handled by a third party, these are not considered first-party cookies.
According to their purpose:
- Technical cookies: These allow the user to navigate through a website, platform, or application and use the different options or services, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, or accessing restricted areas, among others.
- Analysis cookies: These allow the responsible party to track and analyze user behavior on the associated websites. The information collected is used to measure website activity and create user profiles to improve services based on usage analysis.
- Marketing cookies: These allow the responsible party to manage the website's advertising spaces in the most efficient way possible.
According to the duration they remain active:
- Session cookies: Designed to collect and store data while the user accesses the website. They allow the user to navigate and use the available options within the site.
- Persistent cookies: These store data on the user’s terminal and can be accessed and processed for a defined period, which can range from minutes to years, depending on the cookie manager.
Technical cookies used are excluded from the scope of Article 22.2 of the LSSI (Spanish Law on Information Society Services).
